/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Non-EU passport holders in Stockholm may face shorter queues at European airports. The European Union may extend flexible border rules beyond September 2026. Travel Tomorrow reported this news based on industry sources and The Times.
The Entry Exit System started rolling out in October 2025. It became fully active across 29 European countries in April 2026. The digital system tracks non-EU citizens entering and leaving the Schengen Area. It replaces manual passport stamps with electronic records. Authorities collect facial images and fingerprints from non-EU travellers.
Border staff can currently pause biometric checks during busy travel periods. This temporary rule helps prevent severe airport queues and flight delays. Nine European countries asked the EU to keep this flexible policy. Airlines and airports reported border delays of up to five hours recently.
EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas privately reassured aviation industry leaders. He indicated that border checks could be paused when needed. The temporary policy was originally scheduled to expire on September 6 2026. Stockholm residents holding non-EU passports will benefit when flying to non-Schengen countries.
