/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /A moth known for producing toxic caterpillars was recently spotted in Skåne, Sweden. The insect can cause severe skin rashes and breathing problems in humans.
The oak processionary moth caused school closures in Denmark due to health risks. Its caterpillars build nests in oak trees and leave behind poisonous hairs. The wind can easily carry these tiny hairs onto people nearby.
Regional newspaper Sydsvenskan reported the sighting in southern Sweden. The species was last seen in Sweden twelve years ago.
Swedish Museum of Natural History biologist Didrik Vanhoenacker urged people not to panic. He told news agency TT that a single male moth cannot breed alone. The moth likely blew over from the Danish island of Amager.
Experts advise people in Skåne to remain vigilant near oak trees. However, they emphasize that isolated sightings do not mean an immediate infestation.
According to The Local, authorities are monitoring the situation in southern Sweden.
